Early Signing

MAC's own Melanie McClure (MHS/'10) has signed a letter of intent to compete for the Longhorns. UT head coach Kim Brackin and her assistant Jim Henry are very excited to have Melanie on board.

Read more in a Swimming World article here.

Brackin on McClure: "Melanie impressed me by making the tough choice during this decision process; she comes from a long line of Aggies, but decided for herself that being a Longhorn was what was best for her. She has all the tools for becoming a valued asset at the NCAA level; I think her determination, passion and teammates will help put her in that position. Cody Huckabay has done a great job of getting her to race at the national level but, as she gains strength and a higher level of training intensity behind her 6-1 frame, I think the sky is the limit."

Novice & Bronze Reports

From Coach Porter:

Novice

We have split our novice swimmers into three groups. Working with these smaller groups will help us catch more mistakes and get swimmers more feedback. Our ten and under swimmer did a fantastic job at Little Splashers! I am also excited about all the entries for our next swim meet on Halloween weekend. I will be out of town that weekend, but I wish you all the best of luck!

Bronze

The technique of the bronze swimmers is looking awesome! Our next meet is Halloween weekend, and we will be working on starts and turn before then. We will also be working on using the clock more and putting on sets on time intervals to prepare for silver.

Mansfield HS standout Johnny McClure ('09) will compete for the Aggies.

A preview of the meet has been posted on the UT men's swimming site here.

Monday, October 19, 2009

From Coach Huffman:

The Gold group is really getting back into shape with our new dryland regiment. Improving our core strength will continue to be a focus throughout this short course season. Now that we have learned the routine, prepare to have things change up every three to four weeks so that we can "shock" the system and continue making improvements.

I want everyone going to November swim meets to enter at least one 200 yard event and one distance event. Lets see where we are now, so we can see our improvement in February.

Cara's been juggling her classwork - she's majoring in biology - while training with the distance group this fall.

Loria will return to the DFW area for a meet against Austin College (Sherman) on October 24. Centenary's schedule is here.

What if I missed the entry deadline?

We're all very busy these days and we all miss an entry dealine now and then. If you miss our team entry deadline, but would still like your child to compete in a meet, there may still be an option for you.

Most meet hosts will accept late entries (also called on-deck entries) at their meets. North Texas Swimming has a few regulations that must be followed, though.

For example, here's the late entry procedure for the upcoming Texas RiverSharks "BB" meet (10/16-18):

Late entries will be accepted up until 30 minutes before the start of each session at $9.75 per individual event. Any athlete late entering the meet must provide proof of registration and a current print out of best times from SWIMS. NO USA Swimming registration will be accepted at the meet. The meet host and meet referee reserve the right to limit late entries to control the size and length of the meet.

Southwest Collegiate Plunge

Our MISD Natatorium will host the Southwest Collegiate Plunge on October 23 & 24.

Teams competing (click for available rosters): Missouri, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M, and Texas.

MAC/Mansfield HS ('09) standout Johnny McClure will compete for the Aggies.

We'll be hosting some of the world's fastest swimmers that weekend. That's right - Olympians will be racing in our pool! Below are a few of them.

2008 Beijing Olympians Scott Spann, Ricky Berens, & David Walters will swim for UT.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

From Coach Porter:

Novice

I am glad to see everyone back and a lot of new faces also! I am hoping to have everyone’s name down soon. Since we got back we have been working on streamlining off of every wall, and learning the IM order: fly, back, breast, free. Over the next few weeks we will be working on diving, turns, and keeping all our stroke legal for our upcoming meet on October 3-4.

Bronze

Bronze attendance has been awesome! Everyone has been doing a great job of being here and being on time. Since our break we have been working on getting our endurance back, especially focusing on kicking. Keep up the great work!

New Coach Profile

We're pleased to welcome Emily Olson to the MAC staff! Emily is working with our Pre-Comp and Novice groups and is doing a fantastic job with our kiddos.

Emily started swimming for FAST at the age of seven. In high school, she was a TAPPS state finalist for Nolan Catholic in each of her four years there. She captained the team in both her junior and senior years.

Emily competed collegiately for St. Mary's College in Indiana and is now wrapping up her degree work at UTA. She'll graduate in May with an education degree.

She has coaching experience with country club teams at Rivercrest, Woodhaven, and Ridglea.

She's doing a great job for us and we're excited to have her on board.

Tyler Open Meet

MAC will be attending the Tyler Open Meet, June 19-21. The team was planning a travel meet to New Braunfels the following week, but that meet did not get its sanction. Therefore, we will go to the Tyler meet instead. Tyler is an open meet; which means a swimmer of any classification, C/B/BB/A, may attend. It is a long course (50 meter pool) meet so B/C swimmers should take that into account before entering. Entries are due this Thursday. I know this is short notice, but due to our change in plans this could not be avoided. BB swimmers should try to make this meet if at all possible because it will be their last opportunity to make "A" cuts before the "A" champs meet in July.

Coach Huckabay

Sunday, May 31, 2009

Time Conversions

If you'd like a way to compare your long course meter (LCM) swims with those swum in short course yards (SCY), Swimming World has a conversion tool you might want to try.

No conversion system is 100% accurate, but this one's pretty good. Link is below.

Example:

A girl who swam the 100 backstroke in 1:24.51 (LCM) would enter that information and see that it converts to 1:12.09 (SCY).

Time Trials

Special thanks to our helpers at Friday night's Time Trials.

Getting our Novice and Bronze swimmers a little extra "meet" experience was very important and we couldn't have done it without plenty of help.

Christy Tisdall was our starter and Rob Ingle was the head timer.

Thanks to all the club and high school swimmers who took care of the timing for us.

Finally, thanks to our coaches! Carlos Salazar, Christine Porter, and Kristi McClure planned and ran the meet for us.

Once results are ready, we'll get them posted. Since this wasn't an "official" meet, we won't be using these times for entry purposes in sanctioned meets.

BB Meet at The Colony Canceled

Lewisville ISD has closed all district athletic facilities. Therefore, the "BB" meet at The Colony has been canceled. Lakeside Aquatic Club will be refunding all entry fees, and we will let everyone who entered know what your options are once MAC has received its refunded fees. Most likely, we will hold the fees and apply them to the next meet in which your swimmer is entered. Stay tuned, we'll let you know when we have more information.

All Practices Canceled

Effective Thursday, April 30, all MAC practices are canceled until further notice or May 11 due to the swine flu outbreak. This is a directive from Mansfield ISD Central Administration. More information will be available in the coming hours and days. We will do our best to keep everyone informed. Please continue to check the blog as well as the natatorium web site for updates on the situation.

Getting to the BB Meet (edited 4/28/09)

If you're traveling to The Colony for the BB meet this weekend, the address on the meet info (5729 Memorial Drive, 75065) may get you to the high school, but not necessarily to the natatorium - their facility is off campus.

Coach Huffman says some map searches (like Yahoo!) will take you to the pool using that address. For you folks, just ignore this post.

If you're using Google, the address doesn't work.

The pool we'll compete in is located on the corner of Trailview and Memorial.

Go with something like "Memorial and Trailview 70565" in your map search, and you'll have better luck.

Some internet maps have not been updated to show newer construction. Memorial has been finished between Paige and Worley.

If you use Google Maps, try the "satellite" view and you'll see the pool on the northwest corner of Trailview and Memorial.

Finally, there's a water park at the corner of Memorial and Paige. If you end up there, you'll need to travel east on Memorial a little further to get to the meet.

Welcome Back

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday season, and is ready to get back into the swing of things. We have a full schedule of meets coming up over the next two months, culminating with all of the championship meets in February and March. That leaves only a few weeks to make sure our fitness levels are where they need to be, so make sure you're at workout as much as possible.
We are opening up our Pre-comp groups again this month after having them closed to new swimmers since October. We have almost 40 kids on the waiting list ready to start. If you know anyone that might be interested in becoming a member of MAC, now is the time to let them know.
Over Christmas our Jr./Sr. swimmers took part in the "Holiday Hammer Fest." Last week these swimmers put in over 80,000 yards of swimming in five days. Fourteen of them made it through every practice (2/day) all week long. This was quite an accomplishment. look for their picture and a description of what all they did on the website later this week.

I want to remind everyone that is competing in meets that every swimmers is to compete in a "Team Suit." These are available in the D&J Pro Shop at the natatorium. We need to look like a team when we go to meets. So if you have not purchased a team suit, please take care of that before the next meet.

Keep an eye on the blog and the website for updates on when meet information is due. Don't be left out when it's time to race!

Good luck to everyone the rest of the season. Let's Swim Fast!
